High Scores and Indexation

The Viper Verse has now been indexed at itch, making it findable through its tags and title.

As a direct result of this, I've been getting some feedback on the game (even a review!) from a few friendly testers. That feedback is incredibly valued, it's unbelievable how many good ideas there are that people will freely, enthusiastically, tell you if you only listen!

The feedback I got that I was most excited about was the idea of making the game continue after hitting a wall. Classical snake is about ranking up the score. This too exists in Viper Verse, but it's less rewarding than the poem itself. So with that in mind, it makes sense to treat hitting the wall as a penalty, but not a game ending one, so that the writing can continue.

This is not on the backlog for right now, but will be added soon.

Thanks Zizaco (Zizaco - itch.io - go check out his games, I found "Planetary Rescue" incredibly well made and fun!)

Corpus Size: 1052 (+162)

Functional Changes:

  • Changed the base speed to be slightly slower again.
  • Added a HIGH SCORE parameter, which is saved locally
  • Whenever the player finishes the game, they will be able to compare their current score with their high score
  • If the current game achieved a high score, an additional message is displayed

Bug Fixes: /

Current Focus:

  • Making the score appearing on the end poem optional
  • Removing the speed buttons in the option screen and replacing them with an overall speed number setting - allowing for more freedom to configure the starting speed to be as desired
  • Adding options to configure the pace with which the snake grows (once every X words), and accelerates (once every X lines)
  • Making it so that hitting the wall does not end the game directly
